Conception and design of the tomb

The theme requested for this project was very particular and touching because it was not limited to the design and construction of the tomb of Saint Carlo Acutis, but was above all to create a space, a place to "breathe" and contemplate the mystery of the figure of a young man who in his short life had grasped the beauty of sanctity.

In the sacredness of the Sanctuary of the Spogliazione, the inspiration came almost spontaneously: to convey the sensation of Carlo's body being lifted to Heaven despite the use of "heavy" materials like stone. Thus, the "tear" of the sarcophagus, detaching itself from the ground, seems to rise with its trapezoidal shape, further highlighting this effect of suspension and lightness in the ascent.

The choice of material such as Pink Stone is almost natural and significant in Assisi, considering that many components of the church that houses the remains of Carlo (see the floor) are of the same type and color.

To understand and draw inspiration from Carlo, many tiles of a large mosaic form the backdrop, moving erratically, recounting moments in the life, friends, and passions of the young Carlo, testifying to his great faith. They are depicted in bas-reliefs on pale stone and seem to come to life thanks to a light placed on the back of the sarcophagus... a light that further amplifies this moment where mysticism and grace merge.

To seal this sacred place like a stamp, we find the symbol of the Eucharist engraved on the sarcophagus, a theme very dear to Carlo which he considered "his highway to Heaven".
